Hi, Bootyrooty1,
Windows Update is a service recommended by Microsoft that provides updates for Windows components. Sony has its own, which is VAIO Update. We cannot tell exactly what are these and what changes they will make but it is recommended to keep the computer updated. Microsoft made these updates to run your computer smoothly and error-free (as much as possible).

Vincent

Hi Alihyde75,
Welcome to Sony Community!
I understand that you want to reformat the unit to factory setting, if F10 doesn't give you an option to do it then it's possible that the hidden partition is not there anymore. We suggest getting a VAIO recovery disc to reinstall all the drivers and software that came with the unit.
We highly recommend visiting our Sony Global Web site for information on contacting the Sony Support Center in your region at http://www.sony.net/SonyInfo/Support/ to assist you with this issue.
I like to reinstall or reload my windows os on my vio10 laptop model VPCCA15fg. How should I go about it.
What function key do I need to press in order to reload or reinstall. Do I need to reload the drivers again
If so, which website should I go to reload all the drivers for my laptop, Is it go by sequence. Do I need to reload all the drivers.
Thanks a lot for your kindness.
Hi Seanmosley1268,
The model number PCG-3J1L is the chassis number of the laptop. You may check the exact model of this unit on top of the keyboard or on the bezel of the screen. It usually starts with VGN or VPC.
Please refer to this link to help you troubleshoot the issue on your laptop. Make sure to read the instructions carefully before you proceed.

I don't think it'd be worth their time to rub dates off to try and push product visit
I recently did a factory re-install of a system that was purchased around 2012. It had updates rolling in off and on for 3 days.
You can pick and choose, IF you know what you are doing and looking for. Most do not. Also, a lot of updates build on old ones so if you remove the wrong one, you may not get the update you need.
Look at it this way. Windows is a convenient program but it is really a rather shoddy program and people who want to find a way into your system use the weaknesses the op system has.
The updates help block these weaknesses as MS finds them. Over time this accumulates. You only see a couple updates at a time but over the years, the number of those updates gets quite high, as you are seeing.
When you re-install your op-system, the program has no updates, fresh out of MS. It has a lot of catching up to do. It may be excessive, but the program with all its weaknesses is what MS created at the time of introduction. For the most part, ALL the updates are to protect you.
All computers lag, there are various reasons for this and I can't think of any that have to do with the UPDATES. None!
There are quite a few reasons for the computer to run slow.
The biggest problem is fragmentation of the hard drive, the next is the operating system program degrading from use. The program is constantly adding things and deleting things and the op sys is affected by all this action. If you look at the hard drive, the biggest factor to slow your computer down is the hard drive will begin to just run on. Normally, it should only be accessed to get information or a program to run then just idle. Over time, files get affected, or you may be INfected from a virus or keylogger where they steal your information as you type it and send it to the scoundrals that sell your info, credit card, bank account, passwords, etc.
AND LEST WE FORGET, those nasty little viral programs that get in your computer and run behind the scenes slowing your computer down. Some of these fill your hard drive with junk which is why the hard drive runs so long.
Thats why you have anti viral programs on your computer and hope they keep some of this out.
My suggestion is to let the computer update.
When your computer slows down you can try to clean up the hard drive but most times it is easier to just reinstall the op system.
Hello everyone !
I have this laptop for about 5 years and it's amazing, it's been working almost flawlessly (well, hardware wise)
I upgrade it to Win 10 when it was available for free ( original OS was licensed Win8) and after that it worked fine for about 2 years.
But then it slowed and i decide to do complete recovery using recovery media.
Recovery media returned my pc to factory state , and that's Windows 8.
I upgrade it to win 8.1 , and that was ok.
My problems started after that !
I cannot upgrade to Win 10 again ! I tried Win10 Upgrade Tool from Sony esupport site and suceed , but after that
my laptop won't restart. I tried this again and it stuck for 20 hours or more.
(Just to add: Before upgrading to Win 10, i completed Windows update and Vaio update, through their respective menus )
Does anyone have a solution ? Thanks in advance !
I had recently replaced a faulty hard drive on my SVE15117FGW laptop computer. The technician installed window 7 again but it did not have the microsoft office suite installed. This suite was pre installed when purchased and I have a valid product key.
When trying to download these office programs , microsoft accepted the product key but then advises to contact the manufacturer,Sony, for recovery instructions as the original program was pre installed.
Can someone tell me the procedure to download the office suite again, from memory it was called Home office 7 professional and included word, excel and powerpoint ect. I will eccept any version that is free with my product key.
